For the 2011-2012 year, the Wood Program endeavored to construct a smoke sauna on an island near Helsinki’s West Harbor. The goal of the project is not only to build a quality wooden building, but also to engage with the tradition of the Finnish smoke sauna in a spirit of experimentation.

Rather than mimic the atmosphere of the forest, the building establishes a surprising presence that changes dramatically depending on the position of the viewer. At the same time, the structural geometry of the form allows the building to sit gently on top of the rocky shore, resting on only a few foundation points. Inside, the heat room offers a simple yet comfortable atmosphere for relaxing, and the terrace provides a dramatic frame for the view of the lake.
